It is used to create midi patterns and is designed for use with third party midi instruments (but includes a basic but usable internal synth too). The main Ableton piano roll gripes i have is that its Quantize is destructive only (vs Logic, Studio One, Reaper). Thesys, from Sugar bytes, is a VST, Audio Unit (PC and Mac) midi step sequencer plug-in. I don't know i tend to find Ableton's piano roll and clip envelope sequencing miles more flexible than what Reason offers especially when combined with Session View.

I've looked into all the max for live sequencers and while some of them do interesting things, they are NOT matrix sequencers, and they also do NOT record the midi notes they are generating (at least by default, I prob have to use ANOTHER max effect to make that happen).

ABLETON LIVE IS SUPPOSED TO BE MORE SEQUENCER THAN DAW, and yet it has some of the worst sequencing functionality of ALL DAWS AROUND. The Doepfer Dark Time Analog Sequencer is a compact and highly portable desktop sequencer featuring 16 steps, in a 2x8 configuration. Dealing with editing it in complexity SUCKS. This is a FLAGRANT HOLE in ABLETON LIVE and it has bugged me for years.
